Resident Evil 4 - Chapter 1

Since I didn’t preorder I had a little trouble finding a copy to buy. Thankfully, after searching a bit I was able to pick up a copy on Wednesday. The key word of the previous sentence is “Thankfully.” The “thanks” must go to Capcom for crafting what has been a most excellent experience so far. I just beat the first boss and completed the first chapter and this game has me saying wow in so may different ways and in so many different contexts.

The emotion that I’m feeling is excited. I’ve played a few games in the past year or so that I thought were great including Pikmin 2, Paper Mario 2: The Thousand Year Door, Metroid Prime 2 Echoes to name a few, however none of them have really excited me the way the first couple hours of RE4 have. First the graphics grab you, then the control, then the gameplay, then the sound, and then the graphics again in a continual cycle of “Wow.”

It is my goal to keep my posts spoiler free as I do not want to give the game’s story and gameplay away, but rather how my impressions change during the course of my play time. RE4 is going to make sticking to my goal difficult. This is a game that you want to share with someone. Like a good meal that took you hours to cook, it always will taste better with company. While taking on the first boss (that I must admit I’ve seen in many preview videos) I kept trying to get my wife’s attention (a non-gamer) to check it out because it was just so cool. In the first couple hours there are so many details and moments you want to check out and relish in. In fact, I just purchased an item that helps to locate treasures and I’m excited to just wander through the village looking for them.

I was just getting into Metroid Prime 2 Echoes but there’s some serious competition. I also, picked up Tiger Woods 2005 for the DS, however there’s always time to play that for a bit in the subway. I’ll be posting my thoughts on this one soon. For now I must leave the cabin and venture out into the rain to continue the evil adventure ahead. Stay tuned for my next RE4 post. Given my interest level, I can’t imagine it will take that long before I have more to share.
