Paper Mario - Chapter 5

I definitely like a little light and colorful gaming sometimes. I know it may seem weird, but playing a colorful and “cute” game (that’s a good one of course) is just soothing. Like Animal Crossing or Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is just a fun, light, and entertaining game experience.

So taking a break from Resident Evil 4, I popped in Paper Mario 2 to continue my journey to save the princess and deal with what’s behind the Thousand Year Door.

I must say that graphically, I continue to love the paper cutout style. With progessive scan enabled, the implementation is clean and sharp. Chapter 5 takes you to an island that looks fantastic. My favorite area is the one along the water that has waves that look like big spiral curls rising and crashing. It ranks as my second favorite place to visit in the game so far, the first being the magical forest where the puni’s live.

The variation in gameplay experiences also continues to impress me. It seems like every hour or so introduces you to a new character, ability, or situation that keeps the game fresh and interesting. In fact I’m finding myself drawn to go play it now as I’m just starting Chapter 6 as well as I was given a hint regarding how to upgrade my friends even further which I curious to follow up on. Oh no! I really have to finish some of these games. I started too many new, excellent games at the same time. Oh well it’s all about having some down time that’s fun.
